A Summer’s Day at Avebury

There are some places I never seem to tire of, and Avebury is one of them.

We’re lucky enough to have it within easy reach, and as a National Trust property we love visiting the Manor house and gardens regularly. It’s lovely to see the gardens changing with the seasons.

Of course, there are the stones – extraordinary, ancient and almost impossible to comprehend when you stop and think about how long they have been standing there.

But I think what I love just as much is everything around them.

The great Wiltshire sky. The trees. The sheep wandering between the stones. The old buildings, footpaths and gardens. In summer especially, Avebury feels wonderfully alive.

On our latest visit I found myself doing what I nearly always do: wandering slightly behind everyone else because I’ve spotted something I want to photograph.

Flowers. An old wall. Light through leaves. A beautiful corner of a garden.

I’ve long since given up trying to hurry myself when that happens.

Perhaps this is one of the reasons certain places become important to us. We don’t necessarily need them to entertain us. They simply give us space to notice.

Avebury does that for me.

I’ve been many times and I’m sure I’ll go many more.

And somehow, I always find something I haven’t noticed before. I wanted to share a few photos from our recent visit – the gardens were looking exceptionally beautiful.
